About the Recipe

I learned to make caipirinha in Brazil and it completely stole my heart. Fresh lime, sugar, and a good splash of cachaça make a cocktail that is bold, refreshing, and shockingly easy to drink. Every time I make it, it’s a hit. Friends, family, even people I’ve only just met all seem to love it. It’s a drink that feels effortless but tastes incredible.


Cachaça is a Brazilian liquor made from sugar cane and it gives this cocktail its signature tropical flavour. If you can’t find it in store, vodka works perfectly as a substitute, though technically the drink becomes a caipiroska. One day, I hope to make this from limes straight off the lime tree I was gifted after sharing this drink with someone special. Until then, muddle, shake, sip, and enjoy a little taste of Brazil wherever you are.

Classic Brazilian Caipirinha

INGREDIENTS

1½ limes, cut into eighths


25 g caster sugar


50 ml cachaça


Ice, plenty


Lime slice, to garnish

METHOD

1.

Place the cut limes into a cocktail shaker and add the caster sugar.

2.

Using a muddler, crush the limes thoroughly until all the juice has been released and the sugar has dissolved into the lime juice.

3.

Fill the shaker completely with ice, and pour over the cachaça.

4.

Seal the shaker, and shake continuously until the shaker is extremely cold to the touch.

5.

Remove the lid and pour everything into a glass, ice, lime pieces and all. Garnish with a slice of lime and drink immediately.

Tips

Adjust the ratios to suit your taste. Some like their caipirinhas sweeter, others prefer more zing or a stronger kick. This ratio is the one I’ve found pleases the most palates, but don’t be afraid to experiment and find your perfect balance.


Always use caster sugar, not white sugar. It’s much finer and dissolves effortlessly into the lime juice. White sugar will work, but it can leave the drink a little grainy.


Can’t find cachaça? No problem. Vodka makes a great substitute. Technically, this turns your drink into a caipiroska, but the flavour is so similar most people won’t even notice.
