ABOUT THE DRINK

A gin and tonic works because it asks very little and gives a lot back. Good gin, cold tonic, generous ice and lime do the real work here, with rosemary adding a little aromatic drama without making the whole thing fussy.

THE POUR

Ingredients

50 ml gin
Ice, plenty
Tonic water
Lime segments
Rosemary sprig, for garnish (optional)

Method

1.

Fill your glass to the brim with ice. Cold is queen.

2.

Pour in 50 ml of your favourite gin.

3.

Top with tonic water, pouring gently to keep the fizz alive.

4.

Add a few lime segments and, if you like, a rosemary sprig for a fragrant twist.

5.

Give it a gentle stir and sip like you’re on a rooftop somewhere fabulous.

SAMANTHA'S NOTES

Use plenty of ice

Choose your tonic well

The tonic makes up most of the drink, so use one you actually like. A clean, crisp tonic will let the gin shine.

A gin and tonic should stay properly cold from the first sip to the last. Fill the glass generously before adding the gin and tonic.

Wake the rosemary

Gently clap or rub the rosemary before adding it. This releases the oils and gives the drink that aromatic lift without overpowering it.
