ABOUT THE DRINK
An espresso martini earns its foam in the shaker. Vodka, coffee liqueur, cooled espresso and a little sugar syrup need a proper hard shake with ice so the drink lands cold, glossy and sharp, with that coffee-shop-meets-Friday-night top.
THE POUR
Ingredients
45 ml vodka
30 ml coffee liqueur
30 ml fresh espresso, cooled
10 ml sugar syrup
Ice, for shaking
Coffee beans, to garnish, optional
Method
1.
Chill a coupe glass.
2.
Add the vodka, coffee liqueur, cooled espresso and sugar syrup to a cocktail shaker.
3.
Fill the shaker with ice.
4.
Shake hard for 12 to 15 seconds, until the shaker feels very cold and the drink has developed a good foam.
5.
Fine strain into the chilled coupe.
6.
Garnish with coffee beans, if using.
SAMANTHA'S NOTES
Cool the espresso
Shake hard
The foam comes from a proper hard shake. Shake until the tin feels very cold and the drink looks glossy.
Let the espresso cool before shaking. Hot coffee will melt the ice too quickly and can throw off the texture.
Fine strain
Fine strain into a chilled coupe for the smoothest finish. It keeps tiny ice shards out and gives you a cleaner foam.
