About the Drink
The Espresso Martini is a Friday night classic for a reason. It is sharp, smooth, chilled and glossy, with that signature foamy top that makes it feel instantly special.
This version keeps things clean and classic: vodka, coffee liqueur, freshly brewed espresso and a little sugar syrup. The key is a proper hard shake with ice so the drink becomes beautifully chilled, lightly diluted and crowned with foam.
INGREDIENTS
45 ml vodka
30 ml coffee liqueur
30 ml fresh espresso, cooled
10 ml sugar syrup
Ice, for shaking
Coffee beans, to garnish, optional
METHOD
1.
Chill a coupe glass.
2.
Add the vodka, coffee liqueur, cooled espresso and sugar syrup to a cocktail shaker.
3.
Fill the shaker with ice.
4.
Shake hard for 12 to 15 seconds, until the shaker feels very cold and the drink has developed a good foam.
5.
Fine strain into the chilled coupe.
6.
Garnish with coffee beans, if using.
Tips
Use fresh espresso if you can. Freshly brewed espresso gives the best flavour and helps create that classic foamy top. Let it cool before shaking so it does not melt the ice too quickly.
Yes, you need ice. The ice is not optional. It chills, slightly dilutes and aerates the drink, which is what gives the Espresso Martini its balanced texture.
Shake harder than you think. This is not a gentle shake. You want a proper hard shake so the espresso foams and the drink lands cold, glossy and smooth.
Fine strain for polish. Fine straining catches tiny ice shards and gives the finished cocktail a more refined texture.
